I have been using the Joomla Content Engine for a few years now I have to say I don't have much use for WYSIWYG editors. I prefer to write the code and freely use CSS and whatever it takes to lay out a page. However most of my customers who would like to maintain the site themselves are usually not interested or don't have the time to learn HTML or CSS. Some even (I shudder to think about it) type the page into Word and then copy that horrendous blob of code into Joomla and calls it good. The Tiny MCE WYSIWYG editor that comes installed in Joomla works ok although it is limited as to what it can do.

Follow up:

FBC Bloomfield went live last week and one thing they wanted was the ability to change the font color which is one thing Tiny MCE doesn't do. So once again I did a search and found one commercial editor that was, in my opinion, way expensive. Then I found JCE - A Content Editor for Joomla which has the ability to:

  • Style test using familiar buttons and commands, like, bold, italic, underline etc.
  • Insert and edit tables
  • Copy text from Word or other text documents
  • Insert images using an easy to use file browser popup interface
  • Create links, including links to Joomla! content items using a dynamic selection routine.
  • Run a spell check on your finished article.
  • Insert Media files, file links and create image captions - subscription required to access additional plugins
JCE Panel

Another nice feature in JCE is the ability to insert an image and then resize it using drag handles on the image. I have installed it on all of my Joomla sites for my customers to use. Cudos to the JCE team.

I would also like to give a heads up to my friends in Denver, CO. Take a look at their blog Web Site Design Services offered by Notion3.
