I was recently checking out the products on the Lenovo website and came across what I would like for my next machine.  While visiting the IT department at a local school I was blown away by the speed of one of their machines.  I made a comment and was told it had a Xeon processor in it.  So it has been in the back of my mind.

Follow up:

The machine I am looking at is the Lenovo Thinkstation S20.  Since I will install Linux on it, I went with the model that comes preloaded with DOS instead of Windows.  Additional specs of the machine I configured are listed below:

  • Intel Xeon W3520 Processor (2.66GHz 1066MHz 8MB L2) - 130W
  • DOS (No Software Preloaded)
  • Tower 5x6 Mechanical with Intel 36S Motherboard
  • DDR3 ECC uDIMM PC3-10600 1333MHZ
  • 5GB ECC DDR3 PC3-10600 SDRAM (1GBx5 uDIMMS)
  • NVIDIA Quadro NVS290 (256MB, DMS59 Connector to Dual DVI-SL)
  • Integrated Audio
  • Internal RAID - Not Enabled
  • 250GB SATA 3.5" Hard Drive - 7200 rpm
  • 500GB SATA 3.5" Hard Drive - 7200 rpm
  • 500GB SATA 3.5" Hard Drive - 7200 rpm
  • Lenovo 16x DVD +/- RW Dual Layer (DOS)
  • Intergrated Ethernet 10/100/1000

The total cost is only $1754.00.  I think it may be worth it.
